Click on a photo for much a higher quality version. About Carn EunyThe Iron Age settlement of Carn Euny is to be found on the A30 west of Penzance. The site is signposted as parts of the Cornwall Heritage initiative but anyone wishing to find this ancient and very interesting location should go to a place called Drift then take a right heading for Sancreed. Just before reaching Sancreed take a left turn up a narrow lane and follow this to the end where there are a few houses and an area to park. Two paths are marked to Carn Euny and the distance of each route must be roughly the same as we arrived at the same time as another couple who opted for the different path.Carn Euny was once a small farming hamlet which was establish around 300BC and continued at the site until about 300AD. The area was discovered by miners prospecting for tin and the underground chamber, known in Cornwall as a fogou, was excavated in 1863'5. The house remains that can be seen today were excavated in the 1920's and 1960’s. The property is managed by the Cornwall Heritage Trust. The fogou is in a wonderful state of preservation and is a unique feature for this kind of site The entrance to the fogou is quite deceptive as the opening is only around 3 feet high but as soon the portal is navigated it is possible to stand fully upright. Anyone wishing to delve into our past is well advised to visit this special place and just wonder around, read the information signs and go into the fogou. Then stop and imagine life in the hamlet all those year ago. |
